Cessna Citation X

This article first appeared on Medium.com

The Fastest Private Jet in the World

Meet the Cessna Citation X, the only speeding citation a business traveler wouldn’t mind receiving.

The Cessna Citation X: the fastest business jet ever made

Cessna’s premier business jet has more than earned its position as one of the all-time favorite private jets in business and luxury aviation.
The Cessna Citation 10 is famously known as the world’s fastest private jet, and the 3rd fastest civilian aircraft ever produced.
Powered by two Rolls-Royce engines, it’s capable of reaching top speeds of up to 690–705 mph (Mach 0.90–0.92); passengers can enjoy a flight range of 3,700 miles at normal cruising speeds of 525 knots (600 mph).
The Citation X the fastest way for executive travelers and luxury jetsetters to reach their destinations, traveling at an approximate rate of 1 mile every 6 seconds, and shaving a full 30 minutes off of cross country flights.
It has since relinquished the record to its speedy predecessor, the Cessna Citation X+.

High-Speed Comfort

In addition to impressive performance and range, this super midsize business jet offers a luxurious, well-appointed cabin with seating for up to 8.

A plush interior is highlighted by polished wooden finishes, and exceptional headroom is provided with room to stand and move about the cabin comfortably during a flight.
Additional amenities include a spacious lavatory, a full galley, and a pressurized & heated 82 cubic foot baggage compartment for your luggage, golf clubs, ski equipment, or whatever else you want to bringing.

History of the Cessna Citation X

Announced at NBAA 1990, the X came from a long line of successful business aircraft, but despite Cessna’s long history of manufacturing business jets, this was in many ways a completely new animal.

Source: jetAVIVA

One of the main goals American-based Cessna Aircraft Company had going into the design of the X was to change the company’s perception from producing business jets that were slower than the competition.
This resulted in Cessna, to the surprise of many business aviation aficionados, to create the fastest private jet ever made at the time.
Their achievements didn’t go unnoticed, either: the C750 received the prestigious Collier Trophy in its debut year, recognized for its substantial advancements in aviation & aerospace technology.

The Citation 10, officially the Cessna Model 750 or C750, earned its FAA FAR Part 25 certification on June 3, 1996, followed by FAA supplemental type certification in 2009.
It was produced from 1996 to 2012, when it was upgraded to the Citation X+. This broke the previous speed record, taking its top speed from Mach .92 to Mach .935 — thats 717 mph, or 1153 km/h for all you land lubbers out there.
The first model was purchased by golf legend and iced tea icon Arnold Palmer. Textron Aviation, makers of Cessna Aircraft, plan to end production on the Citation X in 2018.
A total of 338 planes were produced, with 314 X’s and 24 X+’s delivered over its 22 year lifetime.

Built for Performance From the Ground Up

Although it looks similar to its predecessors, it’s almost entirely composed of new parts. The wing, tail, tail cone, gear, and systems were all designed from scratch, and not based on existing Cessna aircraft.

It’s also the first Cessna aircraft to use Rolls-Royce engines, and fully integrated Honeywell Primus 2000 avionics.
The Citation X has the same fuselage diameter as the Citations VI and VII; however, the wing attachment to the fuselage is different from the attachment on previous Citations.
The pressure bulkhead is also similar to previous designs, and parts-sharing is limited to some cockpit controls, the windshield, and the tail light bulb.

X Gon’ Give It to Ya

Time. Quality. Cost.
You’re only supposed to be able to pick two, right?
Not in this case.
Executive travelers looking for speed, luxury, and reliability in the same aircraft, look no further than Cessna’s flagship business aircraft.

“I’ve been doing this for 22 years”

Speed and reliability don’t usually go together, but no one told this to Cessna.
In fact, as of this article, all of the Citation X private jets have taken off & landed around 2 million times, with a combined flight distance equaling 3 round-trips to the sun, all while maintaining the highest average duration in the air in the entire Citation fleet.
And, like speed and reliability, Cessna is in the dark about fuel-efficiency suffering at the cost of performance — thanks to upgraded Rolls-Royce engines and extraordinary aerodynamics, the Citation 10 is one of the most fuel-efficient business jets in its class.

Citation X Specifications

What makes this one of the most sought-after private planes in almost every charter market? It’s the fastest business jet in history, saving passengers a lot of time compared to other conventional business jets.

Reaching a top speed of just over 700 mph with a cruise speed of 604 mph at 41,000 feet above sea level, the Citation X makes short work out of cross country and transoceanic flights.
The Citation X’s 23' cabin length provides ample room for 8/9 passengers and two flight crew members. These super midsize jets also provide stand-up cabin space so you can comfortably move during your flight.

Fly in a Citation X | Sales, Charters, & Jet Cards

Want to enjoy a private flight inside the Cessna Citation X? Private jet operators have been collecting C750s for years, and there are several pre-owned aircraft available.

After an incredible successful 22 year production run, the Citation X is readily available whether you’re looking to buy, rent, or catch a ride. Which is your best bet?

Purchase

Pre-owned models can range anywhere between $2 million to $6 million (and up), while the newer Citation X+ can go for anywhere between $10-$18 million depending on year of make, amenities, and more.
If you plan on flying private more than 50 hours annually, and you’re using private jets out of necessity more than luxury, then purchasing a Citation X is a great solution to your private air travel.
What are the advantages? Owning a Citation X means getting from point A to point B in the fastest way available. You can also find a charter operator to manage and market your plane while it’s not in use, helping to recover ownership costs.
Disadvantages? In addition to the price tag, the cost of ownership can get quite expensive, with annual costs totaling upwards of $300,000 annually.

Jet Card Membership

If you fly anywhere between 25 and 50 hours a year, then a jet card could be the ideal solution. Many operators and brokers offer jet cards on specific aircraft, including the Citation X.
Most often purchased in 25 and 50 hour increments, jet card memberships allow you to purchase the right size card for your or your business without the steep cost of ownership.
What are the advantages? Private jet card memberships lock in hourly rates and guarantee availability, which is great if you’re not located near a private jet hub. You’ll also be able to flash around your fancy jet card at parties and social gatherings, if you’re into that sort of thing (hint: a lot of them are. don’t be that guy.)
Disadvantages? If you live in a region with high amounts of private jet traffic; New York, LA, DC, Houston, etc; getting locked into hourly rates might not be the most cost-effective to fly private, especially given the huge availability on private planes in those areas. Some jet cards also include a membership fee, which can run quite high.

Private Jet Charter

If you plan on flying private around 25 hours a year or less, on-demand charter is the best way to go. You can do this one of two ways: contact an operator, or contact a broker.
Contacting an operator gives you direct access to Citation X’s within their fleet, but availability may be limited going to one charter operator at a time. Reaching out to a jet charter broker allows them to compare costs from all of the Citation X’s across the charter market, locating the best deal by comparing apples to apples.
What are the advantages? Chartering on-demand will always cost less since you’re avoiding the heavy upfront costs of ownership and jet card memberships. Private jet charters also provide the opportunity to find an empty leg flight, which can cut the cost of your flight by up to 50 percent or more.

VIP Private Jet to the Cannes Festival

Charter a private plane to the world's premier international film festival

The Cannes Film Festival is held annually along the French Riviera in May, attracting some of the world's most luxurious private planes to the Mediterranean.

There will be plenty of luxury events and parties hosted throughout the city, and many of the world's most influential writers, directors, producers, and actors/actresses will be in attendance for one of the most prestigious events in the world of cinema.

Festival de Cannes

The Festival de Cannes is the world's most famous film festival. First held in 1946 following World War II, the festival has introduced classic films such as Pulp Fiction, Apocalypse Now, and Taxi Driver to cinema lovers around the globe.

The 71st edition of the Cannes Film Festival takes place from May 8th — 19th at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès located on La Croisette.

As more than 20,000 celebrities, filmmakers, industry insiders, and luxury travelers descend upon the Cote d'Azur, so too will their private jets.

Even still, it's 6,060 miles from LA to Cannes; unless you're in a Global Express XRS, Falcon 8x, or Gulfstream G550/G650, you won't make it across the Atlantic without needing to stop and re-fuel.

Unless the studio is letting attendees use their own long range jet, charter planes will be a popular way for many to arrive at popular jet hubs in Nice and Cannes.

Fly Private to the Cannes Film Festival

Private jets are a favorite choice for film festival attendees to match the luxury and opulence of the event.

From renting a luxurious long-range jet for a flight across the Atlantic, or a comfortable turbo-prop for travelers within Europe, to a private helicopter rentals between Nice and Monaco, there are a variety of ways to enjoy a private flight to the Cannes Film Festival.

Even after the awards have been handed out and the confetti has all been cleaned up, you'll find yourself along the beautiful French Riviera in the heart of the Mediterranean Spring, with nearby luxury destinations including Nice, Monaco, and St. Tropez. All three are within quick reach via helicopter or small charter plane.

However, it's important to note that with the rise in demand and congestion at airports along the Southern coast of France, the charter market will become very thin leading up to the event.

It's a good idea to get quotes early and book your flight before the best deals run out. Even worse, availability at Cannes-Mandelieu (IATA: LFMD; FAA: CEQ) may become limited, forcing you to arrive further away at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (IATA: LFMN; FAA: NCE), or leaving you with unattractive arrival/departure times.

Check out the event's official website for more information (http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/), and contact your jet charter provider to arrange your private flight to the Cannes Film Fest this May.

Dassault Falcon 50 and Falcon 50EX

Fly private in the Falcon 50 / Falcon 50EX from Dassault Aviation

The Falcon 50 first debuted way back in 1976. Despite that seeming like an eternity in the aviation industry, it's been a staple of business aviation since it appeared as the upgrade to Dassault's twin-engine Falcon 20.

The tri-jet design from Dassault Aviation revolutionized the business aircraft market. After nearly two decades of successful missions, it received a make-over in 1996 with the Falcon 50EX, and paved the way for Dassault's future business jets like the Falcon 7X and the Falcon 900.

In production through 2008, there were 352 models produced, and the majority of Falcon 50 and Falcon 50EX business jets are either privately owned, or operated by charter companies and fractional aircraft companies.

The Falcon 50 and 50EX models are popular choices for super midsize jet charters, offering high-performance and transoceanic and cross country range for routes like LA to Miami, or NYC to London. Both models also popular aircraft within many jet card and fractional ownership programs.

Today, it's one of the most frequently searched for business jets for private jet charter. What makes the Falcon 50 such an appealing option for executive and luxury travelers?

Let's take a look.

Dassault Aviation's Falcon 50 Business Jet

Achieving the perfect balance of range, runway performance, speed, and reliability, the Dassault Falcon 50/50EX business jet is a pioneer in high-performance, highly-modified business aviation, and one of the most versatile aircraft in the super midsize segment.

falcon 50 private jet

The Falcon 50's tri-jet design delivers incredible runway performance allowing it utilize take off and land at short, high-elevation airports, even at high-temperatures, all without sacrificing performance by reducing total passenger or baggage weight, or the amount of fuel for your mission.

After taking off, passengers enjoy a smooth ride at speeds of up to 551 mph and a 4,025 statue mile range, able to perform coast-to-coast flights in a matter of hours, and offering a maximum flight time of around 7 hours over 3,123 nautical miles.

The Falcon's range was designed to offer a high-end aircraft for transoceanic flights from the United States to Europe and Latin America, however, it also has the ability to carry 8 executives non-stop at a high cruise speed of 613 miles per hour (mach 0.80) with a range of 3,075 nautical miles.

This turned it into an ideal plane for domestic charters, from cross country routes between Los Angeles and New York and executive flights from Teterboro to Dulles, to bachelor parties chartering a plane from LA to Vegas and back.

Flight of the Falcon 50

Many private jet travelers enjoy the speed, range, and comfort offered by the Falcon 50. It’s cabin is usually designed to seat up to 8-10 passengers, while some operators have made modifications to allow high capacity seating to accommodate up to 16 people.

The Falcon 50's cabin measures just over 23 feet in length, 6 feet and 1 inch in width, with a height of 5 feet, 9 inches.

The interior offers 700 cubic feet to freely move about the cabin and stay refreshed after long distance flights, and a fully-enclosed bathroom provides privacy for passengers mid-flight.

There are internal and external storage areas available, and the external compartment has enough space to fit items up to 8 feet long, perfect for surfers and skiers; photography & video equipment; musical instruments, DJ gear, and shellcases; firearms and hunting rifles; and any other big things you want to bring along (or bring home).

Falcon 50

The original model debuted in 1976 and was FAA certified in 1979, inheriting the fuselage cross-section from the Falcon 20, but offering a new design that was area ruled, including aerodynamic improvements using a super-critical wing design, a trijet layout, and an S-duct air intake for the middle engine.

There are several Falcon 50's available in the charter market, and it’s a popular model in the used aircraft market. If you're in the market to either purchase or charter one, you'll be happy to know that most have been refurbished with significant upgrades to match it's aesthetics to it’s history of superior performance.

Falcon 50EX

The Falcon 50 enjoyed huge success as a business aviation pioneer throughout the 80's, and was updated in 1996 with the Falcon 50EX.

The newer model flies higher, faster and even farther than the already high-flying, 600+ mph Falcon 50, all while further improving cabin comfort and flight capabilities to carry the platform’s success into the 21st century.

The EX features the same tri-jet design as its predecessor, but is equipped with new AlliedSignal TFE 731-40 engines, providing more thrust during take-off and faster climb rates, while at the same time lowering fuel consumption by 7%, and reducing overall maintenance and operational costs.

The flight deck is modernized with Collins Proline 4 systems, and some of the models have upgraded to Pro Line 21 by StandardAero as of 2011.

An aerodynamics package is offered by Aviation Partners, Inc, retrofitting the 50EX with blended winglets to further enhancing its performance, range, and efficiency.

Although the last model rolled off the assembly line in late 2007, both the Falcon 50 and 50EX continue to serve as a proven business jet in private and corporate aviation.

Notable Features

  • Dassault’s Revolutionary Three-Engine Performance

A Proven Business Jet Since Your Dad Listened to Vinyl

Owners and operators of the Falcon 50 enjoy its proven track record as workhorse with decades of reliability and dependability.

It's three-engine design offers added thrust for superior runway performance, flexible flight planning with an additional jet engine, and peace of mind knowing one going down means you still have two.

Many variants have been modified to far exceeded it's original specs and flight capabilities to tap into the maximum potential of this incredible business jet.

In fact, Dassault utilized the knowledge and experience they gained in designing and manufacturing the Falcon 50 into their future large cabin business planes, including the 900, 2000, and 7X members of the Falcon family, which continues to drive Dassault's innovation in the super midsize segment.

Winter Olympics | PyeongChang, South Korea

Charter a Private Flight to the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea

The 2018 Winter Olympics will begin on Friday, February 9th, with the closing ceremonies taking place on on Sunday, February 25.

The setting for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games is PyeongChang, a resort town in the northern Gangwon province of South Korea.

More gold medals than ever before, making it one of the Olympic's most anticipated games in recent years; 102 gold medals will be be awarded, 4 more than the 2014 Sochi games.

Sports ranging from ice hockey, figure skating, snowboarding, and skiing will be showcased, along with popular winter games athletes including Shaun White, Lindsey Vonn, Jamie Anderson and more. 8 new events are also included on the schedule, most notably the big-air snowboarding competition.

More than a million visitors are expected to descend upon South Korea for the games, with most passengers arriving via commercial flights to Seoul, then taking a crowded train to PyeongChang.

Instead, private flights to the Winter Olympics can fly directly to Yanyang International Airport (YNY), where its 8,202 foot runway is capable of handling any private plane, including airliners for large group charters. Located just an hour away from PyeongChang, luxury ground transportation or high-security/VIP transport can be arranged to take you the rest of the way.

Security Concerns

However, unless you've awoken from a time-capsule and are unaware of the world's current state of affairs, in which case...

Between North Korea's disconcerting rhetoric, launching missiles over Japan, and the President of the United States openly mocking the North's leader on Twitter...

... let's just things over in that region of the Pacific haven't exactly been at ease, nor have they been stable.

That said, it appears that leaders from both North and South Korea seek to ease tensions leading up the games, announcing they will march together as one into the Olympics, while also fielding a single women's hockey team, a first for the two nations.

Still, in today's world nothing is guaranteed and nothing should be taken for granted. Neither are event planners for this year's games, utilizing additional screening processes and procedures while on sure to be on high alert. This also means slower traffic at major airports as millions of visitors are anticipated.

If you're planning on attending this year's Winter Olympics in South Korea, one of the issues alleviated by private aviation is security issues, limiting your exposure to potential threats and issues, no matter how extraneous the circumstances.

Plan Your Flight in Advance

Although they're by far the most convenient and comfortable way to arrive for the winter games, it's also the preferred way for many high net worth individuals and corporations to travel.

This means due to the high volume of private jet traffic coming into South Korea, airport slots will be assigned for arrivals at local airports. Airport slots are essentially landing and take-off times permitted by the airport, creating a schedule that gets locked in and subsequently built around.

They’re available on on a first come, first serve basis, so it's important to arrange your flight early to lock in the arrival and departure times your prefer.

You should also handle your hotel accommodations ahead of time, with as many as 10 new hotels constructed in PyeongChang and the surrounding areas over the past few months.

Notable luxury resorts to complement your private flight include: Simscabin Winter House, located five minutes from the Winter Games, with loft-style cabins loaded with amenities; Holiday Inn Resort, a luxurious hotel featuring a year-round indoor waterpark; and the Intercontinental Alpensia Pyeongchang Resort, offering some of the best accommodations and restaurants in the area.

Private Jet to NASCAR's Daytona 500

Travel from Runway to Speedway in a Private Jet

It's the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing. It's also known as the Great American Race. It's the biggest event on the NASCAR calendar, and, unlike other sports who feature their biggest event at the end of the year, it's the first event on the schedule.

Rent a Private Jet to the Daytona 500

Does your heart pump motor oil? Have you ever considered 93 octane to be a suitable cologne? Do you find yourself drafting vehicles in the HOV lane during your morning commute?

If you answered yes to any or all of these, then experiencing the Daytona 500 is definitely on your bucket list.

The 60th running of the Daytona 500 will be held on Sunday, February 8th, 2018. The race attracts nearly 150,000 fans from across the country, and as NASCAR has grown, many fans fly in for the race from overseas.

If you're looking for the ultimate NASCAR weekend, you can purchase VIP pit passes and gain access to the infield... along with everyone else who bought tickets as well.

You're still stuck flying commercial, waiting through long security lines, baggage claims, and dealing with heavy congestion both on the ground and in the air.

Are you looking for the most luxurious way to arrive for NASCAR's biggest weekend of the year? You should be looking at renting a private plane to the Daytona 500.

Private Flights to the Daytona 500

When you charter a private jet to the Daytona 500, you'll won't find a closer airport to the speedway than Daytona Beach International (FAA: DAB) -- the runways are located just 2.5 miles from the track, and you'll enjoy a spectacular view of the tri-oval as your plane makes its final approach.

New Smyrna Beach Municipal (EVB) and Ormond Beach Municipal (OMN) are also located nearvy for private flights heading to the Daytona 500.

Flying within the Southeast? Turboprops are excellent for private flight with lower hourly rates than light jets, and the ability to use more runways at local airports, potentially reducing your costs even more.

Midsize and super midsize jets (Gulfstream G200/280, Challenger 350, LearJet 60XR) are ideal for small groups flying to the race, and long range jets (Gulfstream G4, G5, G6; Bombardier Global Express XRS; Falcon 8x) are perfect for cross country and international flights.

Planning the ultimate corporate experience at a NASCAR event? Regional and VIP airliners are available to accommodate business groups of up to 180 passengers.

Please be aware that due to the race creating a spike in private jet traffic, slots may be required for arrivals at local airports. They're handed out on a first come, first serve basis, so make sure you stay on the lead lap and arrange your flight early to lock in your flight times.

NASCAR and Private Jets

Over the past decade, more and more NASCAR teams have utilized private jets to travel between their facilities, non-racing events, and from track to track, befitting from the comfort, convenience, and time savings private planes provide.

Whether they're on the track or in the sky, NASCAR drivers prefer going fast. Drivers and teams prefer traveling the same way.

They don't want to go a lap down waiting in long security and luggage lines at commercial airports. Nor do they want a caution to come out and push back their departure time. Or worse, risk a blag flag waiving and canceling their flight altogether.

In fact, since it’s runway expansion in the early 2000’s, several NASCAR racing teams started basing their private planes just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina at Concord Regional (JQF), earning it the nickname “NASCAR’s Airport”.

These teams prefer Concord Regional over Charlotte Douglas due to its affordability and proximity to their headquarters. Convenient access to Charlotte Motor Speedway and the Z-max Dragway via I-85 doesn't hurt, either.

And, with the Daytona 500 held in early February while North Carolina experiences cold weather, Charlotte Motor Speedway sometimes sends jet dryers used for the race track to Concord Regional to help dry the runways so race teams can depart for Daytona.

Fly Private to the PGA Masters

Leave your driver at home and fly private to Augusta for the PGA Masters Golf Tournament, the first of four major championships on the PGA Tour, and one of the busiest private jet events on the annual sports calendar.

Flickr: Ryan Schreiber
You can always take your time and lay it up with a commercial flight into Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International (ATL), the world’s busiest airport, then continue your journey along the fairway to the Georgia-South Carolina border.

We tend to think your best approach to the tournament is to tee it high and let it fly by chartering a private jet to Augusta Regional Airport (AGS), or a comfortable turbo-prop to Daniel Field (DNL). Both airports are focused on private aviation and features private FBO terminals, offering the most comfortable, secure, and luxurious way to arrive for the Masters.

The right charter broker will be able to offer a tailor-made charter flight, providing instant access to thousands of private planes from light jets for individuals, mid & super midsize jets for your family or golf buddies, and even VIP airliners for the ultimate corporate event.

Turboprops make an excellent choice for passengers flying within the southeast, as they carry much lower hourly rates, and can utilize both airports, with Daniel Field placing you only a chip shot away from Augusta National.

It’s important to note: Augusta experiences a heavy spike in private jet traffic as we get closer to the first week of April. If you’re planning on going with a private flight to the Masters, it’s important that you make your arrangements well in advance.

Airport slots will be required for all flights into Augusta — leading up to the tournament, these slots begin filling up faster than the cups on Augusta National’s practice greens, leaving you with limited, and sometimes unattractive choices for your arrival and departure (learn more about how airport slots work).
